At 12:01 a.m. on October 1, 2025, funding for the federal government expired, leading to a shutdown. Congressman Josh Brecheen, who represents Oklahoma’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress and has served since 2023 after replacing Markwayne Mullin, commented on the situation.
“Let me be clear: House Republicans did our job and passed a clean continuing resolution (CR) to prevent a shutdown. Despite voting over ten times for a CR in the last several years, Democrats are now shutting down the government and have introduced legislation asking for $1.5 trillion in new spending to reopen it. This is ridiculous and would cost every taxpayer approximately $9,300 (or $3,100 for every man, woman, and child in America, depending how you divide the cost)!!!” said Congressman Josh Brecheen.
The legislation proposed by Democrats to reopen the government includes repealing $50 billion from a rural hospital fund established by Republicans in June, funding gender-affirming surgeries with taxpayer money, and allowing undocumented immigrants access to taxpayer-funded healthcare.
Brecheen previously served in the Oklahoma Senate from 2010 to 2018. He was born in Ada, Oklahoma in 1979 and currently resides in Coalgate. He graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1997.
